Niagara Falls, New York

This is one of the places in USA that every Indian goes to, not really sure why? IT's an awesome view.

There is a "Niagara Falls State park" where you can park your car, and walk on the pathways around Niagra Falls.

There's a map that shows all the places around the state park that you can walk. Parking costs $10 every day.

Black Friday 2022

This is an exclusive list of all BF 2022 deals. Even though I say "Black Friday deals", it refers to all the deals that go live during the holiday season, which is mostly from start of November to December end. Every year deals start earlier than last year, meaning this year deals have started surfacing in October itself. This year BF deals are shaping up to be pretty good, considering the glut of inventory that all these retailers have piled up. Good to see deals on BF after pretty lame BF in the last 2 years.

Black Friday 2021 (last year) link is under shopping section here: Black Friday 2021

Anyway I'll list BF deals below. You still have extended return window for the holidays (most retailers like Walmart, Target, BestBuy allow you to return items until Jan 2021), so it's relatively low risk. You can always return the item if you find it at a lower price later in Dec or Jan.

Best place to find all BF ads is from below links (too much advertisement makes it hard to navigate yell)

Deals:

Some good deals summarized (more details in bottom part of page along with deals)

  • Toys: Should see standard toys deals this year too.

  • Bikes: Mountain Bikes for < $100 were already on sale at walmart in September abd October. Hopefully even better price this BF.

Attractions outside USA

This list is mostly of countries that I've visited. Some countries are big, and have lot of cities to visit, while some of them are much smaller countries with only handful of places to visit. I'll list only countries here in each section. All the cities to visit in that country will be listed in that single section only. Few tips for international travel are covered in "Flights" section.

Countries near USA

  1. Costa Rica: Costa Rica should be one of the top destinations for anyone in USA. It's a very small country in central America. The whole country from east coast to west coast an from north to south can be covered by car within a few days. It's safe, just like USA. The cost of virtually everything is high, at par with cost in USA. SW flies to Liberia, so that saves a lot.
  2. Mexico: Another top country to see and visit. You'll hear about how unsafe it is. I visited there for around a month in Mexico city and surroundings, Never ever did I ever feel unsafe. As long as you don't go to places which are actually dangerous (drug places where even Mexicans don't go), you will never encounter anything. Learn some Spanish before you go. You can find cheap flights to Mexico city very regularly from Houston (~$150 round trip). Apart from Mexico City, Cancun, Cozumel and surrounding ports on Yucatan peninsula (south east part of Mexico) are also good option if you love beaches. Best and cheapest way to visit these ports in Yucatan peninsula is via Cruise. A lot of cruise leave from Galveston, TX for as low as $50/day including everything. There can't be anyway cheaper than this to visit these ports.
  3. Canada: A very cold yet beautiful country with lot less people to disturb nature. The most visited place is Toronto near Niagara Falls. People usually go to Canada near the Niagara Falls site, as Niaagra Falls from Canada side is lot more beautiful to see than the US side.
  4. Peurto Rico (PR): This is part of USA and NOT another country. See it under "attractions in USA"

I'll later add a google map section to list major points for each country. Enjoy this !!

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a beautiful small country in central America. You can drive thru the whole country, north to south or east to west in 6 hours or less. San Jose is the capital. It's economy is primarily driven by tourism. It's visited by millions of American tourists every year. Irrespective of Costa Rica being a poor country, it's expensive. The cost for a tourist is on par with what you would pay in USA for travel. Food, lodging, car rental, activities cost even more than what they cost in USA. Activities by far are the most expensive and may easily be 2 times of what they cost in USA. One week is good enough time to see most of the top attractions in Costa Rica. The weather is good all year round, except for rain during May thru November (if that bothers you). It never too cold or too hot as it's surrounded by sea on both sides. USD is accepted everywhere in Costa Rica, so don't bother with exchanging your USD for local currency (colon). Use a credit card to pay for everything. If you have a credit card, that has no foreign transaction fee, that's great. Even if you don't, you will end up paying 3% transaction fee which is still cheaper than converting USD for colon (as even local banks charge you more than 3% for currency conversion).

This website has a lot of useful info for visiting Costa Rica: https://mytanfeet.com/. It's a blog site started by some Tour Guide person, but it's amazing in the sheer volume of material it has, and the painstaking details that this person has put in. I relied almost exclusively on this site to plan my trip.

Flying to Costa Rica:

I've found tickets to be expensive to fly from USA to Costa Rica. Fortunately, Southwest flies to one of the smaller airports in Costa Rica, LIR in Liberia. The biggest airport is in the capital city of San Jose (SJO). My avise would be to fly to LIR unless you can get cheaper ticket to SJO. It doesn't matter which airport you fly to, since the country is small, you can drive to anywhere. Roundtrip to LIR from any US city should cost $300 or so during sale or off season time.

Driving:

It's a very safe country to visit, and very safe country to drive. Road signs, driving on left side, etc is same as in USA. There are few rugged roads (especially the ones which are to natural places), for which you might want to rent a 4X4 car (i.e a car which has all wheel drive). We rented a regular 2 wheel drive, and had no problem going anywhere. However, I've heard people getting stuck on these rugged roads, during rainy seasons, as the car is not able to pull itself out by just 2 wheels moving. If you are driving during dry season or don't plan to drive on some o these adventurous roads, you will be fine with a 2 wheel drive. Even if you drive on some of these dangerous roads, there will be signs alerting you that you should be on a 4X4 to get on these roads. 90% of the roads are fine to drive with a 4X2. I would definitely advise to rent a car, as that's the best and the cheapest  way to see the country. Go with US based rental car companies as Enterprise, Hertz etc. The local car rental companies, though cheaper may end up being more expensive as they will charge you extra for every minor upgrade or every little thing they see on the car, when you return it. Be ready to pay $500 for a week's rental.

Lodging:

I booked hotels thru expedia.com. You can find hotels, as well as individuals renting their houses on expedia.com.
